How do bees produce bee bread in the hive’s honeycombs?
Bee bread is a combination of honey, pollen and lactic ferments, being the bee’s main food. The process of obtaining bee bread is fairly complex. First, the pollen is picked up by the bees and taken to the hive. Here, the worker bees mix it with a small amount of honey and various enzymes. Next, the pollen is introduced into the honeycomb well, where, with the influence of microbial flora, humidity in the hive and the required temperature, it reaches the fermentation stage. At this stage, pollen undergoes a series of biochemical transformations. Over three months of fermentation, the pollen turns into bee bread.
